I had a much better opening than this, but my computer crashed and all
was lost. Well not all. At least my list was saved. Basically I'm nostalgic
about Britain and all that, seen as how I'll be setting sail in under two weeks
(metaphorically speaking). Everybody loves a list, so here's mine. Enjoy.
Things I’ll Miss About Britain
- The music
- BBC
- Charles Darwin on currency (and what that implies)
- Better quality food
- The quaintness of it all
- Religion regarded as a private matter
- The NHS
- Gays and lesbians seen as equals in society
- The green, rolling countryside
- A nice warm pub
- Indian take-aways
- Some of the expressions, like luv, mate and wanker
- General awareness and knowledge of other cultures
- Britain’s proximity to Europe
- Easyjet
- Britain’s heritage: the churches, the castles, the landmarks
around every corner
- A summer with no bugs
- Cheap wine and cheese
- The outdoor mentality of so many Brits
- A cup of tea as priority, being offered at almost every occasion
- Walking amongst sheep
- Never having to go far to reach the sea
- Economizing/emitting a lesser amount of carbon into the atmosphere
- Old professor type men that seem to hold the secrets to the
universe
- Brian Cox (the astrophysicist who won my heart)
And,
Things I Won’t Miss About Britain
- The rain
- Idiot drivers
- Britain’s Got Talent
- X-Factor
- 13-year-old girls pushing around prams
- Anybody pushing around a pram
- Hoodies in track suit bottoms or sweat pants
- Sidewalks right next to the street
- Mispronunciation of words, or saying something like ‘I’m going to
hospital.’ It’s the hospital. And also tea is something you drink;
it’s not another word for dinner
- The lack of greenery in most neighbourhoods
- Bratty kids/teenage kids you’re actually afraid of
- The 80s fashion that still seems en vogue
- Yobs
- Stick-shift cars as norm
- A government that I just can’t get my head around
- Inefficiency of many many things
- Smelly train carriages
- Any disregard to pedestrians
- Dogs off leashes pooping everywhere
- The high prevalence of drinking and fighting
- Heavy accents I can’t understand
- British snobbery
- Football matches and the wankers that chant in public places
- Crowded supermarkets, crowded shops; crowded everything
- Queues
I'd like to say that I love the time I've spent in Britain and the
great people I've met here. I wouldn't change a thing about my experience, the
good or the bad. And that's the truth.
